Now that the wintery weather has arrived in Southern Ontario, many of us are starting to plan our winter getaways! While we all look forward to soaking up the sun down south for a week or two in the winter, it’s not always easy to pack for these vacations. Next time you’re packing for a vacation, try these tips to make it easier!
1. Check the Weather
No matter where you’re going for your winter vacation, you should always keep an eye on the weather at your destination. Don’t assume it’s going to be sunny and warm the whole time you’re there. It’s important to plan for rainy or cooler days so you don’t have to spend extra money on a raincoat, umbrella or sweater once you get to your destination.
2. Think About Your Activities
Visualize what you’ll be doing while you’re on vacation so you can identify the kinds of outfits you’ll need. Will you be going out for nice dinners that require some dressing up? Will you be doing any exploring or walking that might require sturdy shoes? Will you be spending all day, day after day, lounging on the beach? Consider your plans for the trip and pack accordingly.
3. Pack Coordinating Pieces
When you’re limited to one or two suitcases for your whole vacation, it’s important to pack pieces that you can mix and match with each other so you’re not packing anything you’ll only wear once. Choose a great pair of pants that goes with everything and that you’re comfortable in, and a few tops that match. You should also think about coordinating when packing any accessories like scarves, jewelry and handbags. Accessories can also be a great way to make an outfit look different each day!
4. Limit Your Toiletries
One of the struggles with packing for your vacation is the amount of space you have in your suitcase, but an easy way to get more space is to limit the number of toiletries you take with you. Make sure you’re following TSA guidelines for your carry-on luggage, but think about leaving some of your other toiletries at home. They take up lots of space in your suitcase, they can leak and damage your clothes, and most hotels have shampoo, conditioner and other items anyway.
5. Be Prepared for the Beach
If you’re heading down south for a beach vacation, you don’t just need to think about packing the right clothes and a cute swimsuit or two. There are lots of other things to keep in mind for a beach vacation, including:
- Sunscreen & aloe vera (for sunburns)
- Insect repellent
- Beach coverups
- Sunglasses and a sun hat
- Goggles and snorkels
- Reading materials (i.e. books and magazines)
- Beach toys for kids
In spite of the fact that you should be prepared for the weather and pack according to your holiday plans, you should always try to pack light for your vacation. It’ll be worth it not to have to drag a heavy suitcase to and from the airport!
